The first stage of the major two-phase 2024 redevelopment of Circuito de Navarra is racing towards its conclusion, with all work due to finish prior to 16 March ahead of this month’s opening track days. The completion of this initial project will ensure that MotorSport Vision’s (MSV) venue in northern Spain is fully prepared for the early months of the season ahead of the second development phase this summer.
Primary changes during the first phase of the multi-million Euro improvement programme include the complete reprofiling of Turn 6 into an uphill, sweeping and much faster corner. Track day participants on 16/17 March will be the first to experience this more flowing, high-speed addition to the circuit layout before competitive action launches with the Bennetts British Superbike Championship on 20/21 April.
Work on this part of the venue is almost complete, with new asphalt laid in addition to upgraded kerbs and runoff. Work is also accelerating on the previously bumpy sections from the start/finish line to Turn 2 and in the uneven part of Turn 5, which are being re-levelled with the latest 3D road planing technology.
A significant part of the redevelopment work has been carried out by Obras Especiales, which is acting as the primary contractor. Additional support has been provided by surfacing organisation Viaria and road planing experts Samop, ensuring that every aspect of the project has benefitted from first class specialist expertise and experience.
More broadly, the project has been managed by David Almazan Cruzado and multinational engineering consultancy EPTISA. Alterations to the track itself have been made in accordance with plans designed by Driven International, with civil engineer Dimitrios Gravanis on-site to oversee the project as it enters its final days.
The first phase has also included the construction of new marshal posts and debris fencing. Technological upgrades carried out since January include new CCTV camera systems and the installation of FIA and FIM approved EM Motorsport flag signalling panels, a start light system and an info panel, which will come on stream later this month.
Phase 2 of the project, which will see the creation of a substantially revised and enhanced new layout, extending the existing 3.9km configuration to 4.3km, will commence in July and be completed by the end of August.
