Navarra Historic Festival: Tim Child claims double HGPCA victory on new layout

20 October 2024

Tim Child became the first winner of a retro motor race on the updated Circuito de Navarra layout after claiming a double victory in his Brabham BT3/4 in the Historic Grand Prix Car Association races at the the Navarra Historic Festival.

Child drove home to victory following 13 laps of the extended circuit in northern Spain to win by an impressive margin of 11.467s in the first of the two contests. Child’s Brabham BT3/4, originally raced by Jack Brabham himself in the early 1960s, came home ahead of Mark Shaw’s Lotus 21 to lead the outright podium.

The overall top-three was completed by Max Smith-Hilliard, at the wheel of his Lotus 16. In addition to crossing the line third on the road, Smith-Hilliard ended the race as the leading front-engined Grand Prix car.

Dean Baker (Cooper T45/51) joined Child and Shaw on the rostrum for slightly later rear-engined machinery. Further down the order Guillermo Fierro Eleta was the second best of the front engine cars, over a minute down on Smith-Hilliard in his Maserati 250F. Klaus Lehr claimed the last spot on the front-engined podium in his similar machine.

Child followed up his earlier success with victory in the second race of the day too, once again guiding his Brabham home clear of Shaw. This time it was by the much smaller margin of 6.275s, but it was still a comfortable gap for the double race winner.

It was Tom Dark who joined Child and Shaw on the outright podium during the latter race, improving on his seventh from earlier on. This meant that three different manufacturers were represented on the podium, with the iconic Cooper marque joining Brabham and Lotus in the top-three.

Front-engine victory in the second race went to Eleta in his 1950s Maserati. Seventh overall was enough to finish as best of the machines with a front-mounted engine after Max Smith-Hilliard’s Lotus 16 was unable to complete the race distance.
